The AnzanPro Curriculum: From Counting Beads to Four-Digit Mental Arithmetic
Most supplementary education programmes describe themselves as "structured." Fewer can point to a clearly documented, level-by-level progression with defined cognitive targets at each stage, independent assessment checkpoints, and a philosophy of mastery that refuses to let speed substitute for understanding.
The AnzanPro curriculum was designed — not assembled. This post explains what that means in practice, from the first bead a five-year-old moves to the four-digit Anzan a Level 9 student performs in seconds.
The Philosophy: Mastery Before Advancement
Three principles underpin every level of the AnzanPro curriculum:
1. Mastery before advancement. A learner does not move to the next level until they have demonstrated consistent accuracy and speed at the current level. This is not rigidity — it is protection. A child who advances before mastering three-digit addition will struggle indefinitely with four-digit operations. Gaps compound.
2. Deliberate practice, not passive repetition. Repetition alone does not produce mastery. AnzanPro's lesson structure follows the deliberate practice framework (Ericsson, 2016): each session has a specific, slightly stretched target. Speed targets increase incrementally. Accuracy thresholds are maintained. The learner is always working just beyond comfortable competence.
3. Physical before mental. The soroban is not a shortcut to Anzan — it is the required foundation. Children must internalise the physical bead movements before the mental visualisation becomes reliable. Rushing this transition produces Anzan that looks impressive in a single demonstration but fails under assessment conditions.
The 10-Level Structure
Level 1–2: Soroban Foundations
Focus: Physical abacus technique, single-digit operations, bead literacy.
Operations: Single-digit addition and subtraction using the lower deck only. Introduction of the five-bead (upper deck) in Level 2.
Cognitive target: The child develops a concrete, physical understanding of number as a spatial configuration. Place value is experienced tactilely before it is understood abstractly.
What a Level 2 student can do: Complete a 20-problem single-digit addition and subtraction strip accurately, using the physical abacus, within 3 minutes. Identify bead configurations instantly for numbers 1–9.
Age range: Typically 5–7 years.
Level 3–4: Two-Digit Operations and the Speed Baseline
Focus: Extending operations to two digits, establishing the first measurable speed baseline, and beginning the foundational mental visualisation habit.
Operations: Two-digit addition and subtraction. Introduction of carrying and borrowing using complementary number pairs (friends of 5 and friends of 10 — the core soroban technique).
Cognitive target: Working memory begins to hold two-column configurations simultaneously. The child starts to anticipate bead positions before physically setting them — the earliest precursor to mental abacus.
What a Level 4 student can do: Complete a 20-problem two-digit addition and subtraction strip accurately within 4 minutes. Begin short mental abacus attempts (2–3 digits, single-step).
Age range: Typically 6–9 years.
Level 5–6: Three-Digit Operations and Partial Anzan
Focus: Three-digit operations at speed, deliberate mental visualisation practice, and entry into the competition preparation track.
Operations: Three-digit addition, subtraction, and introduction of simple multiplication. Partial Anzan — mental calculation of two- and three-digit problems without the physical abacus.
Cognitive target: The visuospatial working memory load increases substantially. The child must hold and manipulate a three-column bead image while simultaneously tracking the sequence of operations. This is cognitively demanding work that builds the mental stamina that distinguishes abacus-trained children in academic settings.
What a Level 6 student can do: Complete a 10-problem three-digit addition strip mentally (no physical abacus) within 2 minutes, at or above 90% accuracy. Participate in introductory-level competitions.
Age range: Typically 8–11 years.
Level 7–8: Four-Digit Operations and Full Mental Abacus
Focus: Four-digit operations, complete internalisation of the abacus (the child no longer needs or uses the physical tool), and introduction of flash Anzan.
Operations: Four-digit addition and subtraction, two-digit multiplication, and introduction to division. Flash Anzan — a sequence of numbers displayed briefly (0.5–2 seconds each), summed mentally without the abacus.
Cognitive target: The mental abacus is now fully operational. The child's visuospatial working memory handles four columns as a single integrated image. Flash Anzan at this level typically involves 5–10 numbers, each flashed at 1-second intervals.
What a Level 8 student can do: Sum a sequence of five two-digit numbers flashed at 1-second intervals, mentally, at 90%+ accuracy. Compete at regional level in abacus competitions.
Age range: Typically 9–13 years.
Level 9–10: Advanced Mental Calculation and Instructor Pathway
Focus: Competition-grade mental arithmetic, advanced flash Anzan, and — for eligible students — entry into AnzanPro's junior instructor certification pathway.
Operations: Five-digit addition and subtraction, three-digit multiplication, complex division, and sustained flash Anzan sequences (10+ numbers at sub-second intervals).
Cognitive target: At this level, the mental abacus operates at near-automaticity. The cognitive load has shifted from maintaining the image to managing speed and sustaining attention across long problem sequences. This demands a level of metacognitive control — knowing when to reset, when to slow down, when to check — that has broad academic transfer.
What a Level 10 student can do: Compete at national or international level. Sum 15 three-digit numbers flashed at 0.3-second intervals. Demonstrate instructor-level understanding of abacus pedagogy.
Age range: Typically 11–16 years.
How AnzanPro Adapts Pace to Each Learner
The 10-level structure provides the framework. How quickly a child moves through it depends on the individual.
AnzanPro's digital platform tracks accuracy and speed on every practice session. When a learner consistently hits the target threshold (typically 90% accuracy and a defined time benchmark across three consecutive sessions), the platform flags readiness for assessment. The assigned tutor then reviews the flag, conducts or schedules the level assessment, and — crucially — can override the algorithm in either direction.
Tutor override matters. A child who is hitting speed targets but showing signs of rushing — skipping the mental visualisation habit, relying on guessing rather than calculation — will be held at level by their tutor even if the platform says they're ready. Mastery, not metrics, determines advancement.
Certification at Each Level
AnzanPro issues level certificates at each stage, carrying both internal recognition and, from Level 5 upward, alignment with internationally recognised abacus education standards.
- Levels 1–4: AnzanPro Foundation Certificate
- Levels 5–7: AnzanPro Intermediate Certificate (aligned with All India Mental Mathematics Organisation grading)
- Levels 8–10: AnzanPro Advanced Certificate and competition eligibility documentation
For franchise centres, certificates serve a dual purpose: student motivation and business credential. A centre whose students are consistently achieving Level 7–8 certifications is demonstrating verifiable educational quality.
Parent Visibility: The Progress Dashboard
AnzanPro's parent-facing dashboard provides:
- Real-time level progress — where the child currently sits within each level's target range
- Speed and accuracy trends — weekly graphs showing improvement (or a plateau that needs addressing)
- Level reports — a narrative summary at each level completion, written by the assigned tutor, describing what the child mastered and what to focus on next
- Tutor notes — session-by-session annotations from the tutor, visible to parents
The goal is transparency. Parents should never need to ask "how is my child doing?" — the dashboard answers that before the question forms.
